Contre L’annulation Du Prix Liberaturpreis D’adania Shibli

Les événements choquants et tragiques qui ont commencé le 7 octobre et se poursuivent aujourd’hui ont eu des répercussions partout dans le monde, y compris dans le monde de l’édition. L’auteure palestinienne Adania Shibli, qui a été finaliste pour le prix du livre national 2020 pour son livre Minor Detail (New Directions/Fitzcarraldo, traduit par Elisabeth Jaquette), devait recevoir LiBeraturpreis 2023 en Allemagne pour le même livre, publié en allemand sous le nom d’Eine Nebensache (Berenberg Verlag, traduit par Gunth Orth) à la semaine 2023.

Le 13 octobre, les organisateurs du prix, Litprom, qui est financé en partie par le gouvernement allemand et la Foire du livre de Francfort, ont publié une déclaration disant que Shibli ne recevrait plus le prix lors de la foire du livre.

En outre, une discussion publique avec Adania Shibli et son traductrice Gunther Orth à la foire du livre a également été annulée.

La déclaration indiquait à l’origine que cette décision avait été prise conformément à l’auteur, qui a ensuite été relayée, sans vérification, par un article du New York Times (maintenant corrigée). Ce n’est pas vrai; Adania Shibli a déclaré que la décision n’avait pas été prise avec elle, elle a été saisie de la décision. Si la cérémonie avait eu lieu, a-t-elle dit, elle aurait profité de l’occasion pour réfléchir au rôle de la littérature en ces temps cruels et douloureux. L’éditeur américain de Shibli, Barbara Epler de New Directions, a écrit une lettre à la rédactrice en chef du New York Times, que nous exposons ici :

Avec l’incroyable chagrin qui est maintenant subi de tous côtés, il ne sert à ne pas proposer de mensonges, en particulier à propos de l’auteur d’un roman sur la Nakba qui est historiquement vrai.

Annuler la cérémonie et donc essayer de faire taire la voix d’Adania Shibli – « due à la guerre en Israel » – est lâche.

Mais dire que Shibli a accepté (avec toutes les souffrances à Gaza) est pire.

Au moment où la foire a publié une déclaration disant qu’elle veut faire entendre les voix israéliennes « particulièrement visibles à la foire »,

Alors que le détail mineur de Shibli a été étalé comme étant antisémite par deux journalistes et rédacteurs littéraires, d’autres critiques littéraires sérieux l’ont clairement réfuté dans la presse allemande et ailleurs. Le livre fait référence à des événements bien documentés liés au viol d’une fille bédouine en 1949 par une unité de l’armée israélienne.

L’éditeur britannique de Shibli, Jacques Testard de Fitzcarraldo, écrit : « L’un des objectifs de la littérature est d’encourager la compréhension et le dialogue entre les cultures. À une époque de violence aussi horrible et de chagrin, la plus grande foire du livre au monde a le devoir de défendre les voix littéraires de la Palestine et d’Israel. Nous sommes solidaires d’Adania Shibli et de ses éditeurs allemands, Berenberg Verlag. »

Dans cet esprit, ceux d’entre nous qui ont participé à l’écriture, à la traduction et à l’édition affirment fermement que l’annulation d’événements culturels n’est pas la voie à suivre. Nous nous souvenons de la foire du livre de Francfort qui a soutenu les éditeurs turcs et de la manière dont l’année dernière, le président ukrainien, M. zelensky, s’est adressé à la foire dans une allocution préenregistrée. La Foire du livre de Francfort a la responsabilité, en tant que grande foire internationale du livre, de créer des espaces permettant aux écrivains palestiniens de partager leurs pensées, leurs sentiments, leurs réflexions sur la littérature à travers ces temps terribles et cruels, et non de les fermer.

Nous devons chercher de nouvelles idées et des nouvelles idées afin d’aborder ces temps sombres d’une nouvelle manière.
